CHÂTEAU LYNCH BAGES

Château Lynch‑Bages Grand Cru Classé "Pauillac" 2013

The power and elegance of a great Pauillac. Lynch-Bages 2013 is an intense red colour, while the aromas are a complex blend of black fruits, violet and pepper with subtle woody notes. The wine is balanced, combining aromatic elegance with fine tannins, and the first taste is full smooth and lively. After a very rainy winter, the soil was again soaked through during the equally damp spring. Although budburst was surprisingly homogeneous, this cool weather slowed down the growth of the vines. In July and August, a combination of sunny days and high temperatures raised hopes that this might compensate for the phenological delay in the vine growth, but the harvest was still very late. Veraison was however homogeneous, with a rapid ripening of the skins at the end of September. Effective team work and the availability of good grape pickers were both a enormous boon, providing us with vital support during this difficult end of season.

CHÂTEAU CHEVAL BLANC

Château Cheval Blanc 1er Grand Cru "Saint-Emilion" 2013

A deep, ruby red appearance. The intensity of aromas is very pronounced. On the nose, it conjures up a cocktail of red fruit, raspberry and cherry, and candied fruit, black-berry, blueberry and plum. Swirling unveils a floral bouquet of Austin rose and lilac, together with a hint of almond. The tannins are ripe and silky, smooth and rounded. The wine is supple and full and the medium-length finish leaves an impression of freshness. The absence of oak is worthy of mention. 2013 mainly featured a rainy June which disturbed flowering and a hot and dry summer. Thanks to a historically low yield in volumes, 2013 Château Cheval Blanc is a wine full of freshness and smoothness.

CHÂTEAU HAUT-BRION

Château Haut-Brion 1er Cru Pessac-Léognan 2014

The 2014 Haut Brion is a blend of 50% Merlot, 11% Cabernet Franc and 39% Cabernet Sauvignon picked between 11 September and 10 October, cropped at 42.9 hectoliters per hectare and raised in 70% new oak. Haut Brion exudes more red fruit than La Mission Haut Brion, adorned with wild strawberry, bilberry, tobacco and again, just that hint of menthol in the background. The palate is very fresh and taut on the entry. The acidity is very nicely pitched and there is a touch of marmalade and blood orange that is tangible at the back of the mouth. There is real frisson to this Haut Brion, not quite as seductive and as smooth as its sibling over the road, but very persistent in the mouth. Haut Brion has an inch, just an inch ahead of its rival sibling.
