The 2013 Riserva Vignolo is a surprisingly weighty and structured wine from a site that typically shows a more delicate side of Nebbiolo, but the 2013 vintage gave many good surprises. The Vignolo site, rich in sand with interfingered clay, typically shows the delicate, reserved side of Barolo, but in 2013 the wine shows precision, heft and power. Aromas of dark fruits, with significant rose and violet notes, dominate the nose. The palate shows a precisely delineated structure of ripe tannins, fine acids, mature fruit and mid-weight structure. It finishes with typical Vignolo grace, with a final pas-de-deux between the mineral and fruit notes as the Vignolo floats off the stage.
